Must Visit National Parks Near Bangalore For A Weekend Getaway

The city of Bangalore is well known for being the ‘silicon valley’ of India. Besides, city dwellers also adore the lovely lush gardens, the museums and yummy filter coffee and delicious dosas. Well, while the city has that, it is equally easy to get out of Bangalore and visit few stunning national parks near Bangalore  for an weekend getaway. One of the oldest and most beautiful national parks in Karnataka, Nagarhole National Park was established in 1955 as a wildlife reserve. The park was renamed to Rajiv Gandhi National Park recently, and is home to lovely rosewood and teakwood trees, as well as thousands of flora and fauna. The Nagarhole river also flows through the park accentuating the atmosphere that itself is a sight to witness at twilight. Travellers can enjoy seeing animals come to graze and quench their thirst at dawn and after dark.

The Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its thrilling jungle safaris. Travellers who want to opt for a quieter trip on the weekend can make their escape to this beautiful reserve that is also home to an elephant sanctuary. It is located about 3-4 hours’ drive from Bangalore and can be easily reached by road. The park has over 253 variety of birds and is home to stunning feline queens such as the spotted leopard, cheetah and panthers.

Bandipur is one of the best national parks near Bangalore spanning over 874 square kms and home to some really stunning fauna. To get here, the best thing to do is taken one of Bangalore’s outstation cabs and enjoy a long picturesque drive of around 5 hours. Over 10,000 animals live happily at Bannerghatta including Indian Elephants and tigers, gaurs and lethal vipers.

Travellers can rent rooms within the park and enjoy a couple of nights in the wilderness. You can also join in some adventures and get your adrenaline pumping with activities such as rappelling, river rafting out in the wild.

Bannerghatta National Park


Located to the south of Bangalore itself, Bannerghatta is perhaps one of the largest national parks in South India and certainly one of the best national parks near Bangalore. The famous park established in 1971 is home to a butterfly park and a zoo in addition to wildlife.  Home to the Indian Leopard, Golden Jackal and Wild Boar and many more amazing fauna, you can plan a trip with your entire family and enjoy jungle safaris in the wild during your weekend.
